Call For Papers
Submissions are invited for a special edition of the AFRICAN PERFORMANCE REVIEW on African Dances in and out of Africa.
Central Theme of the Special Edition
In 2013, APR curated an issue that focused on dance exclusively, and over a decade later, it is important to do so again.
COVID-19 had a profound impact on the dance sector in Africa. The arts funding landscape is even more difficult to navigate. Technology has enabled dancers from across the continent to move together in the digital sphere yet systematic inequalities in travel still exists across national borders. There is innovation of African dances on the stages, screens and streets and still the tension between appreciation and appropriation of African dances by the global north.
This special edition of the African Performance Review (APR) focuses on dances in Africa and out of Africa to provide a critical survey of how these have shaped our dance landscape.
This issue, as its previous special edition on dance did, hopes to include as many African dances, as many geographies, as many dance companies and choreographers, to stress the diversity and complexity of dances in and out of Africa and the plurality when Africa dances.
This special edition particularly aims to centre contributions from African scholars/choreographers/dancers/producers.
This edition intends to celebrate the diversity of the continent too in its format, so including the standard journal article, it also encourages visual essays, interviews, and other formats.
