Abstract

In an interchange between two South Africans, one a dance photographer and the
other a dance festival curator and dance scholar, this article sets out to debunk the
homogenising by (primarily) global North rhetoric around ‘African dance’. This
visual article seeks to celebrate the complexity of contemporary dance makers in
Africa through the lens of South Africa’s JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Festival.
